How can we develop an awareness of identity as a necessary layer of relationship-building in our association and practices?
Research demonstrates that, in spite of good intentions and being fair-minded, our unconscious mind and automatic brain processes frequently favour people most “like us,” creating blind-spots and hard-to-see discrimination that is systemic, preventing many hardworking people and groups from moving forward in society. Based on the bestselling book “Deep Diversity: Overcoming Us vs. Them,” the workshops will cover the role of emotions, bias, identity and power in support of a more inclusive therapeutic and productive workplace environment.This Deep Diversity training series suggests that in order to advance diversity and inclusion, organizations need to understand how the hardware of the mind fuses with the software of socialization, and what steps can be taken to offset implicit bias, as well as systemic discrimination in workplace and therapeutic practices, policies and relationships.
Deep Diversity® Modules 1 & 2: Emotions and Bias - Uncovering Personal and Systemic Bias
In these modules, participants will learn the role of the unconscious mind in human interactions and how this results in micro-inequities in a variety of environments, including in therapeutic ones and in society at large. Implicit bias theory will also be covered along with bias-reduction strategies. We also explore the concept of emotional intelligence and its critical application in inclusive leadership.
Deep Diversity – Modules 3 & 4: Identity and Power - Uncovering Power, Privilege and Systemic Barriers
In these final modules, participants will explore the role of Power in order to uncover the systemic patterns of discrimination in a variety of environments, including in therapeutic ones, and in society at large. We look at how our human habits of belonging not only result in predictable dynamics between in-groups and out-groups but also defines our individual and collective identities.
